Staunton, Va. – Virginia Scenic Railway has been selected by Southern Living magazine as one of the best places in the South to see fall foliage by rail. With peak color on full display, there is still one weekend left to experience it. Additional service has been added to the original schedule for the “Alleghany Limited” to provide more opportunities for guests to ride.

The “Alleghany Limited” is a classic ride that departs from Victoria Station in Goshen and carries passengers through the mountain scenery and autumn color that earned the railway its place on the magazine’s list. The three-hour round-trip travels along a historic rail corridor and winds through the picturesque George Washington & Jefferson National Forests. The route features expansive views of North Mountain, as well as the working farms and pastoral landscape of the western Shenandoah Valley.
The train may reach speeds as high as 40 mph, however most travel will be average speeds of 25-30 mph. Achieving this kind of speed sets Virginia Scenic Railway apart from typical tourist railroads, which operate on spur lines and are often limited to shorter distances and to restricted speed limits.
Our vintage passenger cars are heated and fully enclosed. Guests will have limited opportunities to step into the vestibule area at select times during the ride. Seating options include coach, table, lounge and dome classes at a wide range of price points. Tickets start at $85 per person. Children aged two and younger may sit on a ticketed parent’s lap for free.
The Southern Living recognition comes at the height of the fall season, and the final weekend of train rides finishes with a flourish just as peak color arrives to the Shenandoah Valley.
